Week 16: José Altuve

José Altuve hit two home runs and had six RBIs yesterday, which was the perfect end to a great week in which he had an amazing .560 batting average and equally impressive 1.513 OPS.

The ESPN Player Rater currently has him rated as the most valuable player in fantasy baseball this season. While that is not necessary a perfect metric it is a pretty good one. In any case, it's undeniable that Altuve is "coming up big in every way" for the Houston Astros. His performance this season has definitely put him on the MVP list.

On June 25th, Altuve almost hit for the cycle, but he tripped on his own helmet rounding second trying for his triple. He had to settle for just a single, a home run and two doubles in one game. He was a good sport about it and was already laughing it off when he went back on his belly to tag second.

Week 15: Jacob deGrom

Looking at the pictures this week, you would be forgiven for thinking that I had chosen a romance novel model rather than a baseball player to be my MLBoyfriend. But no, I am giving New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom and his famous locks the honor.

Yesterday, deGrom pitched his first complete game for the Mets, and he gave a great performance on the mound. In a 5-0 shut out of the Philedelphia Phillies, he gave up just one hit--a  third-inning single by (oddly enough) the Phillies' starting pitcher, Zach Eflin, and ended up with an impressive game score of 97, the fifth highest in Mets history. The only problem with his performance was that there were very few good pictures of him actually throwing the baseball during it. This is the most flattering one I could find, and it doesn't really do him justice:

If anyone thinks this blog is just a beauty pageant for baseball players, I'd like to point out that I'm batting .643 with nine of my fourteen picks being chosen for the MLB All-Star Game.

Congrats to you all on earning two of the biggest honors in Major League Baseball this summer, being elected to the All-Star Game and spending a week as my MLBoyfriend.

Week 14: Max Kepler

I live and work in the Twin Cities, and after the week we've had, I was clearly going to pick a Twin today. Max Kepler was a leading candidate obvious reasons:

Then, on Sunday, Kepler hit a grand slam to help in the Twins clobber the hateful Texas Rangers 15 to 5. It was the first Twins grand slam of the season and rookie Kepler's first in the big leagues. Kepler has a knack for making a big impression. His first major league home run was a walkoff dinger against the (also hateful) Boston Red Sox which led to this picture of Kepler with my other favorite Twins, Eduardo Escobar, Eduardo Núñez and the dreamy Trevor Plouffe.

Week 13: Danny Espinosa

It seems appropriate to pick a member of the Washington Nationals as my MLBoyfriend on the 4th of July. However, my selection of Danny Espinosa is not a hollow display of patriotism. Last week, he had a .423 batting average and 1.593 OPS with five home runs and a whopping seventeen RBIs--he brought home six more runs than anyone in MLB.

Most of Espinosa's fireworks at the plate came in a four game series against the Cincinnati Reds in which he hit the five home runs including two grand slams. Not surprisingly, the crowd in Nationals Park showed him a lot of love.

He made several trips out of the dugout for "curtain calls".
